Expobar Brewtus IV rotary pump buzzing noise

Postby JoeWeiss on Wed Mar 23, 2011 7:30 pm

My Brewtus IV is making a a new buzzing noise that it wasn't making before. The machine is two weeks old and was very quite until recently. It has now been making a strange buzz that is quite loud. Here is a link to some videos of what's going on http://www.youtube.com/user/BrewtusIV

Has anyone experienced this before? Please let me know what's up with that.

Sounds to me like metal rattling.

Cup warmer, drain pan maybe? :?:

Did you drop a spoon inside? (Just kidding).

Good luck. :D

Sounds like the braided stainless steel line is touching the overpressure valve. From your second video:

Other possibilities include:

  • Pump cavitation due to restricted inlet line - check if water filter is clogged, inlet pressure regulator set too low, etc.
  • Sympathetic vibration with some other component - use cardboard tube held to ear as stethoscope to locate buzzing
  • Brew pressure gauge damping coil is full of water - remove and heat with hairdryer or heatgun
  • Damaged or cracked pump vanes due to running pump dry (?) - unlikely but included for completeness
Rotary pumps are whisper-quiet; it's what they make vibrate that causes the noise.

I think Dan has it correct. Sounds like metal on metal crime.

Thanks guys. It does seem to be metal on metal cavitation. When I hold the waterline still it seems to go away. Also before the metal water line was slightly coiled. When I uncoiled the line and it was straight the noise went away too.

Secondly if you would check out these pics of my boiler leaning on the pump. Does this seem right either? Could this cause any problems?

That is not right at all.

The rear boiler, the coffee boiler if I remember correctly, should be vertical, in exactly the same line as the steam boiler, and definitely not touching the pump motor.

The boilers in my Duetto are at an angle too, though nothing as drastic as that. I've always wondered if it's right.

Joe,
It sounds like the pump is sucking in air or maybe has been damaged from sucking in air. From your pictures I can see that there was some shipping damage. Our CS folks will be contacting you in regards to replacing the machine.
Let me know if you have any questions.
