Elektra Kappa WTS 2

Postby cannonfodder on Tue Jul 29, 2008 4:02 pm

Has anyone seen the new Elektra Kappa WTS 2 two group. It looks like an interesting machine. The group and steam wand layout is unusual, the brew controls are located right above each group and not in the chassis, LCD display to show system status, infusion, error reporting, and it boasts a PID and temperature resolution of 0.25C. The computer interface is slick but it looks like a temperature controlled heat exchanger since the spec only lists a single 13 liter boiler but includes a filtration unit that notifies you when it needs serviced. Not as sexy as most Elektras but an interesting bit of tech.

The 60's series has changed as well, unless it is an old photo. It has the larger drip tray cover like the older units but the power switch has been relocated to the left of the front panel instead of the center. I always hated my switch there, when backflushing or rinsing the group it always ends up getting water on it. One day it may get a little too wet and short out.

The PDF mentions both brew and boiler temperature control. It looks like the next generation espresso may not be dual boiler, but an HX with some sort of regulating valve. If each group is thermosyphoned, one can adjust the average brew temperature of each group at low use with a valve on the loop. But for high use, something cleverer is needed.

In any case, the stepping motors and valve stems for graduated control used to be expensive, I guess they've come down enough to make whatever they are doing with the HXs competitive with dual boiler machines.
