You seem to have solved the problem. And, I'll add more to the discussion for others if your solution doesn't work for them. In E61 machines that have made a lot of shots, the cam followers can wear to the point that they now longer open their valves completely. These are the square brass parts that contact the cam. The solution is to replace them.
