Do cold temperatures damage espresso machines?

Postby nanbush on Mon Dec 20, 2010 10:29 pm

I recently bought a used Brasilia Portofino DEL2 espresso machine & while building the new restaurant, we stored the machine in our garage. We are in Utah and it's been pretty cold the last couple of weeks, it probably got close to single digits in the garage, but never below zero. I mentioned this to a local "beverage specialist" and he said I have probably ruined my machine...anyone have any experience with this issue?

If the machine was full of water and the water froze, the internal plumbing may have been damaged... possibly quite badly.

What made you ask this question in the first place? Have you tried to use your machine but its not operating as it should? If so, what is it doing? or not doing?

I do hope your machine was waterless at the time is was in the garage during those low temps. Take a look at this thread Can someone ID this Faema? It talks about freeze damage. It's not very long, only about 10 posts long. Have the dials spun around? This could be an indication that something went wrong. If youre handy, you can take the machine apart and fix it, no worries you can do.

We all hope for the best.

A ruptured heat exchanger is the worst. Bulged or ruptured piping can always be replaced but boiler damage is disastrous. If everything was dry, then having in the cold will do no harm. If it was not drained of water, you may get lucky, or may have a big door stop. Only way to tell is to hook it up or pressure test everything.
