I used the scace and temp is 212 at idle and goes down too 200 after about 20 seconds which is a low as it gets. That is with the boiler set just over 1bar. I can wait to try the restrictors. are you running the boiler at 1 bar?

I am curious, do you use your speedster, lambro, or E-61 the most?

I have a 1 group E61 now which is set around 1 bar. I can't quite remember how it ran but I may dig it out next week. But I try and use small restrictors so that they need to be heated up rather than cooled down to pull a shot.

The valve that Eric kindly pictured is the new solution I mentioned before. Very nice it is too. I think Kees VDW uses them as well on his HX machines.

I suppose my regular machine is a 1 group Linea Paddle, but really I swap them out every few weeks and move onto the next one. I do like to use my machines rather than let them gather dust. Saying that though I have several machines I restored, tested with a Scace and then packed them away without running coffee through them.

I'm starstruck here!! That is one awesome looking machine, and I'm absolutely positive that this photo doesn't do this baby any justice!! OK, this is my first post here at HB..I've been feeling my way around and found some very good advice from Levergirl and Cannonfodder(older post) for my leaky Gaggia Achille. Anyway, about your machine....reminds me of one of those super high performance show cars where the guy chrome plates all of the underbody parts and then sets a mirror on the floor so the passers-by can see under the car while gaping at either the fantastic chrome job or the amount of outlay it took to get it that way.
Looking at your tray I can see the reflection of the groups and portafilters just shining like gangbusters. Ok, so I guess you could say I kinda like your machine and all that it stands for, and I don't even know anything much about anything yet because I'm a noob....but I can sure recognize beauty when I see it! Good luck dialing her in(tweaking). I'm working very hard to get acceptable shots from my Achille....not as easy as one might think

I have just bought a 1968 single group machine and want to install restrictors

It may already have a restrictor in the "top tube" at the grouphead. These were dimensioned at 2.0 and 3.0 mm ID or anything in between if a 2.0 mm restrictor were reamed out a touch.

Have you taken the machine apart? A top view of the internals would help.

What is the, as Paul Pratt said "mystery valve"


I am thinking it controls the rate of flow for the auto fill? perhaps so it does not cool of the boiler too quickly?

this is the top of my machine, not sure if it has the restrictors, I have been able to achieve good shot temps with flush technique.

I believe it originally was the steam control for the cup warmer.

Here is a drawing of the 2-group boiler area showing the adjustable thermosyphon valves. I'm ALMOST certain that a single group machine could be fitted with one of these. While it may seem that both pipes are the same, I would need to have more Faema knowledge than the minuscule I have.



I do know that the restrictors I have discussed in previous posts are available from the Faema site I listed and those guys are both nice and smart. As you can imagine, restrictors are very inexpensive whereas the valve is not.
