Cimbali Junior blowing steam

Postby bgn on Fri Apr 17, 2009 5:59 pm

Still getting to know this cimbali junior, and it looks like i'm about to learn a bit more. I come home today to find the junior is blowing of steam (continually) through what appears to be a boiler over-pressure or safety valve. From what i can guess, the boiler element is not shutting off (the boiler gauge indicates a boiler pressure higher than what I've ever seen it before) and the excess pressure is forcing the safety valve to vent steam. I shut everything down and let it cool. When I started it again the boiler element cycled on and off just fine for about 10 minutes, then went into it's "stuck-on mode", triggering the safety valve to blow off steam again. I've since shut it off several times long enough for the steam to stop venting, and when I turn it on everytime I can hear that the boiler element comes on and stays on until it starts blowing steam again. Now I can't get it to stop doing this. Is there a temp probe that could have gone whacky? or pressurestat? If you have a junior and have had this problem, your experience shared would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Barry.

How old is your Junior? Is the steam venting more towards the front (where the controls are), or more toward the rear? My Junior is an older model that has a vacuum breaker above the water level sight glass, and it's possible that they can have issues that prevent them from sealing up. They have an o-ring on them, and sometimes need a good cleaning and/or replacement o-ring. If it's towards the back, it could be the safety valve and that's something to be more concerned about. If the gauge is above normal then it probably isn't the vacuum breaker, but I thought I'd mention that to see if you can notice where the steam is coming from.

Thanks for the reply. My Junior is an older D series (about 15 years) with volumetric dosing, plumbed, vibe pump. I see the vacuum breaker directly above the boiler sight glass. That is not where the steam is coming from. I have had issues there as well. This is on the other side of the machine on some type of safety valve that is attached to the boiler.

Sound like a classic sticky pressurestat. Over the years, the diaphragm hardens until it sticks. There may be a rebuild kit, but otherwise just replace the pressurestat.

Thanks Dan. That is what I was hoping for when I posted the symptoms here; that it would fit a "classic" malfunction that was fairly common.

Thought I'd follow up this old post with some info I received recently. My Junior has a pressurestat that is the same as it would be in bigger 220v machines. It has three sets of contacts where the wires screw on, but my Junior, being a 110, only uses one of these sets of contacts (two wires). Many thanks to my local dealer who would not sell me a new pressurestat (at $200) until I had gone home and checked to see if the other two sets of contacts were in good condition still. They are, and after changing the wires to another set of unused contacts on the pressurestat it works like a charm.
