Can you revitalize a manometer?

Postby mattwells on Thu Feb 15, 2007 7:03 pm

I just received my new (to me) Andreja Premium and Mazzer Mini. Everything was packed great and works fine, but the brew gauge is at about 12 Bar with the machine off. Is there any way to revitalize the manometer, or should I just buy a new one?

Thanks in advance,

I am sure someone, somewhere does refurb gauges but it would not be worth the waste of money unless you have a gauge worth several hundred dollars. Just order a new one and pop it in. Give Chriscoffee a visit, I believe he has them.

What does it do when the machine is on and there is a blank (or coffee) in the pf?

Haven't really had time to play with it. I spent most of yesterday pumping the vodka out of the boiler, haven't really gotten to play with it - got one shot in last night, but that was it.

I am going to observe the gauge today and see.

It looks like the pressure gauge is working, it is just reading 12 bar too high - when I put in a blank basket it read the pressure ramp up and then topped out at what would have been (approximately) nine bar.

Weird. It needs a reset button ;)

Needles are thin metal with a hole / slit that is pressed on the gauge's spindle. Maybe the espresso machine got a nasty jolt during shipping, enough to loosen the needle (?). I once dropped a gauge and broke the glass. The needle shifted, though not nearly as much as you describe.

You can attempt to repair the gauge yourself:
1. remove the gauge from the machine.
2. pry the cover off the gauge. (the cover is pressfit onto the gauge from the front. A big screwdriver with a SMALL flat blade, pushed into the gap from the back, pushed in and pried outward, will loosen it. It is an art.)
3. pull straight up and remove the needle.
4. gently push the needle back on the center post with the needle right by the "zero" post.
5. put the cover back on.
6. put the gauge back in the machine

Yes, I have done that, to 2 gauges, in a way that is not noticeable unless you see the pry marks which are inside the machine when the gauge is mounted back in the machine.

But, yes, you have to be damn careful.

I have NO idea why it happens.
