Bottomless portafilter for Elektra T1

Postby malling on Fri Nov 04, 2011 4:26 am

Hello Home Barista

I have just got my fingers on this fantastic machine.

But it doesn't seem like Elektra are making any bottomless Pf to their machines.

Therefore I wanna know which pf from other manufactures I can use instead.

as I have understood it's not possible to use LM pf, but why is that. ??

The Rancilio commercial portafilter certainly fits:

The OEM bottomless for E61 groups also fit ("Faema style"). You could take your portafilter to a machine shop, but keep in mind the bowl is tapered, so the hole will need to be smaller so as not to compromise the strength of the handle joint.

The channel cut in the grouphead is too narrow to accommodate the thickness of the ears of the La Marzocco portafilter (i.e., it can't be engaged to lock in).

You can make a LM fit an Elektra but you have to file down the lugs on the portafilter. I had to do that on my Scace so it would fit the raceways in the group bell. I have a variety of portafilters from new to very old and the only ones that have never workd in the Elektra were the LM and Gaggia. The LM due to the size of the locking lugs and the Gaggia because they offset the lugs so they only work in a Gaggia.

You could always modify one of your stock portafilters. Easy to do if you have a drill press. Just use a 54mm hole saw and drill out the bottom. A little sand paper to smooth it out and you are finished.

Thanks for posting this, malling. I was wondering the same for my T1. Part of the discount on my purchase was that I didn't get any pf's. Since I need to buy one anyway, I would like bottomless.

I have the Rancilio bottomless from Chris Coffee in use on my Elektra - the cut, done by Lino Verna, looks excellent (it also came with a straight-sided triple basket, if you need it).

So in theory It should be possible to use this PF.

Can the handle On this PF easily be unscrewed, as I would prefer one with a handle made of Wood or bakelite (As the handles are made of)

Like this one or perhaps one of those Nice looking handles from La Marzocco.

I have noticed that the elektra handle screw is 12mm. The same size as the Rancilio pf.

But are the handle On Rancilio easy to remove and if it is, Can it be fitted with the elektra pf handle.

I'd consider 54mm a little small. I've got one triple basket that measures 59mm across the bottom & it sits deep enough that it wouldn't fit with a 54mm cut out. Both of the bottomless LM style p/fs that Kees supplied have a 60mm hole.

That portafilter will work. I have one. The elektra portafilters use a M12 1.75 thread stud. The Rancilio uses a completely different setup. It uses a full length bolt through the handle then attaches with a retaining nut. Completely different setup.

Thanks

so the Pf you are using would that accept the Elektra handle. They both seem to use the same standard 12mm bolt.
