Boiler pressure problem with used Isomac Millenium

Postby zeltner on Tue Jan 17, 2012 3:45 pm

Ive just bought an Isomac Millenium, from the very beginning i found that the pressure varying. Often around 1,5 bars but some times below 1 bar. The last time i used the machine the pressure rised quickly and suddenly some thing broke. I just heard a ppfffffffffsssssssssssssssst!

Do anyone recognize the problem in general?
Is there a high pressure valve that can be replaced?

I never had such a problem with my europiccola

Sounds like the pressurestat is sticking. How old is it? The so-called "ppfffffffffsssssssssssssssst" was probably the pressure safety release opening to prevent the boiler from rupturing. Pressurestats do eventually fail, either due to carbon buildup on the contacts (fail open), or the contacts heating/arcing and welding themselves together (fail closed). Yours sounds like the latter case; replacing the pressurestat should resolve the problem.

If you're modestly handy, replacing the pressurestat is straightforward. Remember that you should allow the internals to dry completely before putting it back in service.

Thank you for your informative answer! I bought the machine second hand, but it should not be older than one year.
Is the pressure safety release something that i can reset by my self?
Do you mean the spears when you say internals? I am quite handy but my english is quite poor...
Could you recommend me were to buy a pressurestat?

Pressure safety release usually resets on its own when the pressure drops back down to below dangerous. I just had the same experience. I'm not sure what 'spears' refers to, but I believe that Dan was referring to the electrical and plumbing parts on the inside of the stainless steel panels when he said 'internals'.
I dunno where to suggest getting a pressurestat in Stockholm, but I bet that anyone that sells espresso equipment there would have an idea.

Check with Kaffecompagniet, they are really nice to deal with. Another alternative is Kaffemaskinen. Both should be able to help you.

Thank you all for the advice. I will contact someone of the referenced sites tomorrow. But I am sure that the pressure safety release didnt reset by it self. Something else is wrong. Ill look at it tomorrow to.

safety valve opens at about 1.8 in the perfect world,
however after years of pressure pushing on the spring and considering your pressurestat working higher then it should,
it is not uncommon to go bad just like any other component it will fail
make sure that the leak is coming from the valves opening and NOT from the fitting boiler/plastic cup to valve itself
which a very common place in Isomac machine to leak from

I had to wait until weekend to find the time to work with the machine. I have now removed the valve. But i cant for sure say that it wont leak when i put it back, any ideas?

Is there any way to control the function on the pressurestat? Do somebody know where to find a new pressurestat?

Stefano answered your question, didn't he ("it is not uncommon to go bad just like any other component it will fail")? If the safety pressure release valve leaks at normal pressurestat settings, replace it.

From the FAQs and Favorites: How to adjust an espresso machine pressurestat.

You may be better off asking on a board based in your country like Riktigt Kaffee, as suggested earlier, or go with osks' earlier suggestion ("Check with Kaffecompagniet, they are really nice to deal with. Another alternative is Kaffemaskinen").
