Astoria SAE2 CMA Argenta Pump/Pressure Issues... [Resolved]

Postby kjmonopoly7311 on Wed Dec 21, 2011 11:34 pm

Merry Christmas y'all!

I have a 1999 Astoria Argenta SAE/2N.

So far I've hooked up power and plumbed it in. My manual boiler fill works. My autofill sensor works, too. When the boiler gets below a certain level, my rotary pump kicks on.

However, when that happens the boiler does not fill. Only when I press the manual fill button (whether the pump is on or not) will the boiler actually refill.

Likewise, when I go to pull a shot, no water from the grouphead.

Thoughts? Even though my pump is running, how could I test it to make sure it is functioning correctly?

Boiler refill solenoid is clean. Haven't checked group solenoids yet.

Apart from this issue, the machine is fully functioning. Comes up to heat, pressure gauge works as intended, steam wands and hot water tap are perfect. Just no water from groupheads and no water into the boiler when autofilling.

I will greatly appreciate any thoughts you have. Thanks,
Kevin

Does it have an external pump for filling and to pump water through HX to group? Could the line from pump to inlet be connected on the wrong side of the manual valve? That would be one explanation for why it won't fill automatically without the manual fill valve opened. (Just a thought, I've never seen the machine in question.)

Chert I appreciate the quick reply! Yes, there is an external rotary pump, but it is properly connected to the inlet for the machine.

Question: Is it at all possible that the pump is pumping the opposite direction? We have our water line connected to the inlet with the down (in) arrow and the machine connected to the up (out) outlet. So that should be good. But I started wondering if it is pumping the wrong direction. Just a thought.

I've also read something about vanes inside the pump. Anyone that can expound on that?

After giving the pump the vinegar bath, should there have been any weird details to which we ought to have paid attention when we "put it back together?"

I'm becoming increasingly convinced that it is the pump, not the gicleurs or group solenoids. They will still probably get attention tonight, though. What could be wrong with this pump??? Is it even possible that it be running but not doing anything?

Problem solved! After more reading, decided to take apart the pump again and do a descaling. Cleaned up very nicely with the 50/50 solution of water and white vinegar. The big discovery came when I realized the pressure screw had been disconnected from the spring and shaft that control the pressure.

Once everything was re-aligned, we were good to go!
