Astoria Argenta SAE 1 /CMA Laurentis - Wiring & Upgrades

Postby ljcoffeeguy on Tue Apr 05, 2011 10:54 pm

I just picked up an Astoria Argenta SAE-1 110v 1 group unit yesterday off of CL. It was sold as a "parts / restore" unit, but the previous owner had replaced the pump and included a new switch.

When I took off the panels this morning I had hoped to find that the existing switch was still in place, just inside the machine. No such luck, just stray wires: 3 black, 2 red, and 1 white.

Please note: the switch is the one O 1 position switch that turns on the heater element, not the illuminated switch.

Does anyone have a picture handy or could draw a diagram of what wire goes to what contact of the 2 pole switch?

I have the electrical diagram, but it doesn't include this model and I can't make out what goes where.

Much appreciated...

Thanks you to those who sent manuals and pictures - I have the machine operational! The main chore was figuring out the wiring for the pump, a Zecchin G. pump with 2 red and 2 black wires. If anyone needs a picture of the final outcome, email me.

UPGRADES that I would like to do:

1) Preinfusion: The 'dispense' switch activates the pump and solenoid. Is it possible to just use two swithes - turn on the solenoid to act as a passive pre-infusion, then turn on the pump? Will this work?

Another option is to find some kind of delay and attach it to the pump portion of the switch. I.e. hit the switch, solenoid is on then after "x" time the pump kicks on. Are there any small delays or the like that will work? Otherwise I could just use a momentary push button and hold it in for however long needed.

2) Thermal cut-off: there is no high-limit stat on this. Can I wire one inline on an SSR to control a cutoff? It would be:
Relay activation side: Red from Power terminal > hi-limit therm > SSR > black wire to power terminal
Switch side: Pressurestat > SSR > Boiler Element (only switch one side of element?)

I don't know all the technical terms, but hope the above will work.

Thanks for any input!

1. This is exactly how you want to do it.
Hook up a delay - relay

it gets the signal to start pump and you set delay to however long you want.

During this time the solenoid is open and water is coming in @ line-level pressure.

After the delay, the pump kicks on and you get your normal pressure.

Thanks for the info - this is the route I was hoping to take. I've googled and looked for some of the delay ssr's and can't seem to find a good that would be a simple dial, perhaps that could fit in the space of the On-light indicator (I'd relocate the on-light).

Any suggestions on a delay ssr, anyone?

Also, any recommendations on a thermocouple, thermocouple adapter, and a temperature readout (PID)?

Thanks for the above info - I will order a compression fitting this week.

If you don't mind, please tell me which Omega thermocouple you purchased? You mentioned it was a 1/16". Is there a way to bend either the probe or the wiring so that I can get in inside the case with covers on? It looks as though you are using it without the panels on.

What PID or temperature readout unit did you get? I was thinking of the 1/32 size from Auber.

Thanks!

Astoria SAE Junior (CMA/Laurentis/RIO) Refurbish Log
My machine is running with the cover on.
I did bend it, as long as you do it carefully it will not be a problem

Any kind of reader will work for the readout, personal preference on size/shape/etc

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to figure out what probe to get. What length of sheath did you get? 2", 3", ???

Do you think this would work?
Omega part: KTSS-116G-3 Grounded with a 3" sheath?
