Have you dropped the dispersion block and soaked it in espresso cleaner (TSP) lately? Rancid oils are one possible culprit for bitterness.

No extra space for espresso equipment, but placement should be a bit better with dedicated power, water and drain. We plan on raising the counter by a couple of inches to accommodate some 'real' feet on my Elektra instead of sitting on the counter.
