Who else squeezes coffee bags with one way valves to smell them?

Postby aab1 on Mon Dec 06, 2010 11:11 pm

I realize most here get fresh roast, but if you ever get beans from a grocery store have you ever squeezed the bag to smell the scent coming out of the freshness valve? That's actually how I choose my coffees, I squeeze and smell each bag and I get a pretty good idea of how it will taste. It's the best way to tell how the coffee will be like without buying and trying it.

People may wonder what I'm doing as I squeeze coffee bags in my face though

Yeah, that's one of the rewards of coffee shopping.

But it's a lot more fun at a real roaster or cafe

Freshly roasted coffee outgasses for several days, providing ample "huffing" opportunities. Sadly, the grocery store fare around here would barely eek out one whiff.

I call it a bag hit. My son likes to squeeze the bag and huff the goodness as well.

I purchased a bag of reserve coffee from Intelligentsia about 6 months ago. It was easily the best smelling coffee I have ever had. I left it on the counter for days, and every time I walked into the kitchen, I lunged at the bag and gave it a squeeze. I felt like Woody Allen and his orgasmatron. LOL

I did this at a store a couple years ago and popped part of the bottom seam. This has not stopped me from continuing to do so but I did change my technique.

Yep, every time my order comes in, I see what day it was roasted, and then "Valve Huff" every bag. I love doing it, the coffee smell is amazing.

Even better is when your shots taste just like that smell.

Yep. Whenever I buy retail coffee, I have a snort.

This was really fun with the 1kg bags from Terroir, back when I was getting them from a ice cream and coffee shop back East...
