I'm guessing I'm not close to 20% extraction...no EK43 for me . Regardless, I think Black Balsam is a great blend.endlesscycles wrote: That said, 20g extracted to 20% will absolutely overpower a 6oz milk drink. A 22g split shot flavors two caps nicely.

The Devil's Lettuce by Dark Matter coffee is pretty bizarre and tasty. I've only made espresso but will dabble in the clever tomorrow.

I've been working through Mountain Air's Gatomboya AA. I've enjoyed it in every prep I've tried so far, each emphasizing different aspects of the coffee but retaining its overall personality: juicy, sweet, and clear. Yum. Buy some (or don't so I can get more).

All this talk of Black Balsam had me finally looking for it on Mountain Air's webshop, but it doesn't appear to be there anymore - was it a limited thing or something? I see Black Mountain, but no Black Balsam.

Click the "Espresso" button and you'll see Black Balsam and two others.

George Howell Pulcal Typica from Guatemala.
I am learning that I really like Guatemalan and Ethiopian coffees.

Two highly pleasing extractions this morning. 1) Stumptown's Hairbender current iteration. Gone is the note of jasmine but the blend offers chocolate and a fruit note that the roaster labels cherry, it wan't that defined for me in the shot this morning.
15 minutes on after the lingering tobacco finish I got from the hairbender, I pulled a shot of 2) Velton's Sulawesi Toarca Toraja A. Also delicious: sweet caramel balanced with a pleasing fruity acidity. More nuanced than the hairbender shot and the finish holding sweet caramel. That coffee is a challenge as some extractions and pourover cups have a bell pepper taste that is nice but the extractions like I had this morning have more WOW sweetness.

Geisha! I decided to find out what the fuss was about and I ordered 125g of Costa Rica Geisha from Sea Island Coffee in London. It arrived yesterday and I immediately brewed 21g in a 3-cup (300ml) press pot. Amazing! This was one of the few times in my life that something lived up to the hype. Today I tried as a 7g espresso. Again amazing, but the powerful taste was so concentrated that it was almost painful (in a good way) to drink it. (The brew ration was only 55%)
