To Freeze or not to Freeze Coffee

Postby vitomatt on Tue Jun 14, 2011 11:31 pm

So I've read the threads, but its been a while and now I can't find them.
Whats the general consensus on freezing beans? Yes? No?

And what are the guidelines:

Must freeze the beans within how many days of Roast?
Whats the best container to freeze the beans in?
The original bag or glass? Cover up the degassing hole or not?
How long can they be frozen?
Should the beans be defrosted in same container they were stored in?
How many days of degassing should be provided for?

Any other tips are welcome. Thanks!!

you can go through the search, there's a lot of topic about it, and even some experiment.

I believe this article answers all your questions. The short answers are that freezing works; most prefer glass Mason jars, ideally sized such that the defrosted coffee can be used in a few days. If the bag isn't too large, I toss it in as-is instead of repackaging. As for how long, see Frozen Coffee Storage Calculator.

For the long answer, search as Marc suggests, especially referencing the FAQs and Favorites and forum search tips.
