Sweet Maria's DP Ethiopian Koratie - Page 5

Postby marlyece on Tue Dec 09, 2008 5:01 pm

Hey Rob,

I just got the koratie greens from 2 cups of joe and i must say they have exceptional customer service and the greens LOOK and smell fantastically fresh. They have some amazing prices, too! I'm roasting up a batch now...I've done the Sumatra/Brazil blend separately and am roasting the koratie according to what you rec too. I know I need to let it rest but I'm anxious to try it and report back here.

The Koratie can be VERY fruity when young...like 2 hours young!
Give it a taste...maybe an Aerobie press cup if you have one....or french press, if you dare.
Sometimes it's cool to do so, if only to track how the coffee develops.
Funny, my batch from Burman's is not nearly as fruity as my batch I purchased from SM's 4 months ago.
Still excellent coffee, but I did read that some of these Ethiopian green can age faster than other beans. Not sure about that, though.

Funny...just went to 2CupsofJoe's website. I only saw the washed Korate, not the DP (natural) processed, "Koratie"
There is a BIG difference.

Ok, I didn't realize there was a diff between the two...koratie and koratie. as far as taste, the korate I roasted yesterday is very sweet...has a wine like taste to it. it's very fruity but i don't think i notice any blueberry tones. I'll have to buy some from sweet marias. wow, so much to learn! i wonder how this will taste as it rests a bit more.

SM ran out of the Koratie awhile ago. Trust me, the SM stuff tasted and smelled of blueberry. And during the roast, just before first crack, it smelled of blueberry cobler.

Apparently the free sample that 2 Cups kindly included was actually the same DP Koratie that SM's had a few months ago...it is delish! Next I am going to roast up the washed. I'm too much a novice to be able to detect blueberry yet I think but boy is it good!

Spresso_Bean wrote:Hopefully not too off-topic, but is the Burman DP Koratie as good as the stuff from Sweet Maria's? I was thinking of getting some DP and WP from Burman since they still have some and it sounds like the Koratie supply overall is fantastic.

Edit - oops, I didn't realize the DP from Burman is already out of stock. Should have placed an order a bit sooner...

As I've roasted 2 batches, 14oz in the Behmor city-city+ I can say actually no, this Burmans green is not giving me the blueberry that my 3 months ago SM's green did. In fairness, it could be that we're somewhat near the end of season, and I may have posted already that these beans may age a little less gracefully. They did smell VERY fresh when I got them. My last roast was very light, a true city, and as evenly as the behmor roasts, I had to toss out quite a few quakers, barely tan. Still, barely fruity.
I may have just had some of that elusive lot from SM's you get every once in a while. Burman's quality is never in doubt, I'd say.

I like to pick up greens in person on occasion at Burman's since it's only about a 20 minute drive and they're always very helpful...Garry and John, that is.
