Starbucks' Ethiopians?

Postby bogiesan on Sun Feb 08, 2009 9:39 am

No, I'm not kidding. Serious question.

One of HB's more vocal curmudgeons recently gave me some of his carefully roasted Ethiopian Worka. It made an outrageously b-i-g, delicious, and fragrant single source espresso. The bastard ruined me and I've been chasing a similar flavor experience ever since.
My local roaster in Boise ID, Dawson Taylor, often brings in excellent but small batches of Yrgacheffe and Harrar and they sell out rapidly.
I see Starbies sometimes has Harrar, Sidamo, and a premium sun-dried Sidamo on the shelves. Has anyone tried these or are they an expensive waste of time?

Yes, I know I can mail order superb Ethiopians from the roasters who participate here on HB.
I do not expect to replace the explosion of the Worka, just looking for an emergency supply of Ethiopians.

Premium sun-dried Sidamo? It's not for nothing that they have earned the nickname Charbucks. There are no exceptions.

Thank you.
I have received one carefully thought out and serious answer to a legitimate inquiry.

Personally, no and probably.

You know that most likely nobody here would try it. Did you expect a chorus of "no, I haven't tried any"?

Feel free to try them yourself and report back.

I just don't agree with their roasting theory. an excerpt from their site about their roasting "The smell of freshly roasted coffee fills the air, along with the sound of applause created by the final clapping of the "second pop."

Not much "thinking out" was required: I bought a bag a month or so ago, to see if their specialty beans were roasted any differently than what you get over the counter. They weren't. A mouthful of ashes.
