I think they charged you and your friend incorrectly. Not good. I've always paid $18 for a full pound.

Well, I gave Rocanini (on W. 5th) two tries today: on the way to work at 8:15am (closed), and again after work at 4:45pm (still closed). I'm not sure what their operating hours are, but I'm pretty sure I envy them!

Settled for a half pound of Eastside Organic from JJ Bean--my first non S.O. purchase from them. I figure it will be plenty good enough to keep my espresso apprenticeship progressing. (Not to mention that I got these beans for next to nothing--being a regular has its privileges ;)

I should mention that the barista who gave me the wonderful shots was only at the 5th location temporarily. He was on loan from steveston and is no longer at 5th. Their hours are 8:30-4:00 mon-fri. This is mainly because the store front and cafe were an afterthought. It mainly serves as a roasting facility.

Gotcha. I'll have to make a point of getting down there on one of my days off then. (And thanks--I'll probably skip the shot and just grab a bag of beans.)

If you're in there I suggest you try the cold brewed coffee. It's really something special. I'm not a drip coffee drinker myself but this slow cold brew method results in a VERY smooth coffee. No harshness that I normally associate with drip at all. I'd almost liken it to a good scotch.

I'm not sure that it's worth the effort. Far better can be had with relative ease.
JJ Bean has been doing some good stuff recently- the single origins in particular and the new roaster for Origins is starting to get it together - for a while there the beans were quite baked. The big dude in town is OK and there's lots of great import to spend your money on that's far beyond that of Roc...
