Roasters in Michigan - Page 3

I grew up in Birmingham, MI, North of Detroit, and still head in that direction for most holidays. With that said, I am still in town just post Easter. Having been into espresso since '06 and been roasting for about 2 years now I find myself to be pretty critical of most shops coffee. . . So I never really enjoy what I find when around my parents for the holidays.

Last time I was in town I noticed there was a chop in downtown Birmingham called Commonwealth Coffee. At the time they were buying their roasted coffee from Stumptown. I did not get a chance to stop by last time, but I did earlier today. Apparently they recently took on roasting themselves and I must say I did enjoy the espressos I had while at their shop earlier today. Of the 3 doubles I had two were pulled perfectly and one ran a second or two long showing blonding / bitterness.

Anyway, they roast their own coffee, had several offerings that I have in my green stash (very good estates), serve coffee either pour-over or drip (per the customers request), had quite good looking food (although I did not eat) and roast a few times a week.

I am not sure how many baristas they rotate, but I approve of the Brazilian /Rwandan espresso blend they were serving, the roast level of the beans I had and the ability of the barista who pulled my shots.

If any of you check out Commonwealth in Birmingham. Please leave me feedback I would love to hear others experiences (since I have only been there once. . . Tomorrow will make two times).

I can confirm Commonwealth is one of the best options in Metro Detroit for a good cup. I'm in about 2-3 times a week since it's 2 miles from my workplace. Originally, I was there for the Stumptown offerings... But as has been mentioned, what they are now roasting is really worth trying. Great stuff any way you like it. For the latte/cap folks... their C Latte is really nice.. They incorporate some almond milk which gives it a touch of sweetness. All their milk comes from Calder dairy. They seem to be making quite a splash too... It's always pretty hopping!

E. 9 mile Road, Ferndale ('burb just north of Detroit)

They roast a variety of beans, have very nice equipment including vac pots and FP. Only coffee here, no snacks, no flavorings....

I've had several excellent shots here....some not so great. Like a small micro-brewery, he has his roaster on display behind glass walls.
