Roaster in Ottawa

Postby NickH on Wed Jun 01, 2011 12:34 pm

Moving to Ottawa soon and would like to continue to avoid mail-order as long as I possibly can. Anyone know of any good roasters relatively close to byward market/elgin st area?

Hey there - I won't repeat/re-post, but I started a post and gave several submissions at CG, under "Eastern Canada" under the heading "Ottawa beans".

Bridgehead soon to roast their own beans. Look forward to this.

I had heard that Bridgehead was to begin roasting in September - I haven't heard great things about the cafes though, perhaps this is due to the beans roasted off-site in the past. I'll find out for myself when I arrive in August...

Thanks Herschel, those posts at CG were very helpful!

News flash! Pierre at Happy Goat got a brand new Solar 2kg shop roaster a few weeks ago. In red. It's beautiful.
Also in the Ottawa area is La Tierra on Rue Vaudreuil in Gatineau. Both will sell you greens if you wish.

I'm hoping for better things from Bridgehead when they bring roasting to Ottawa.

The thing to note about these three operations is that they buy fair trade coop coffees almost exclusively. Not a bad thing in itself, just that they don't have the micro-lots that you can get elsewhere.

It has been a while, but there was a place called I-deal Coffee on Dalhousie in the market. They were great when I was last there, 5 years ago.

This is an update about Bridgehead Roastery and some interesting details about the construction.

We can expect some fresh coffee in April.
The coffee they sell currently is not bad. But coud be a little bit fresher. It comes from Montreal and there is no way to check the freshness since there is no date on the bags and the staff doesn't know (care ?) about the freshness issue.
Most people think coffee gives spirit; in fact boring dudes are more annoying after they drank some - according to Balzac
