Ritual Coffee - Double Rainbow

Postby jasonmolinari on Fri Oct 29, 2010 7:20 am

Just received my coffee from Ritual Coffee, through Gocoffeego.
Drinking their Double Rainbow seasonal blend.

It's very tasty. Very bright, but definitely not sour, just a little tingly on the tongue. It doesn't have a heavy body, feels light when drinking it, just flows over the tongue. Haven't identified singular flavors at this point, the only one that shows up evidently is a tobacco-y-ness after finishing the shot.

Seems pretty forgiving on brew temp. I've tried it 198-202 on my duetto, and the flavors do move a little, but not much at all. Used 18g in my Isomac double basket. 25 seconds to 1.5 oz.

I refuse to buy coffee from a company that bases its logo on the flag of the Soviet Union.
That flag represents the mass extermination of millions of its citizens

From their web site: "What is so special about the coffee, you ask? It's the precise care we take with every step. From our uncompromising selection of green coffee, to our unflagging attention to roasting; from our rigid freshness standards, to our navy seals' style barista training camp." "Uncompromising! Rigid! Training Camp!" Be afraid of your local coffee roaster, be very afraid!

I think it's a bit harsh but I have to admit that it's kinda weird they imagine their logo from it. They said it was purely aesthetic but still, each is opinion...

As a matter of espresso...
I tried db rainbow last week and didn't like it that much, I preferred sweet tooth!

They may have started out when Soviet memorabilia was popular, early 90s. In those days, the newly defunct Soviet symbols meant "yippee, no world war three, we get to live."

Of course, we didn't know then how much more dangerous shoe bombers were than thousands of thermonuclear missiles ready to launch in minutes. Clearly, the greatest benefit of the ended cold war is our vastly improved sense of proportion.

Sorry dudes, there is another 8 page thread discussing the merits of the Ritual logo. can we discuss the coffee in this one?

I like Double Rainbow a lot, even though it's a touch bright. How about you guys?
I raised the temp all the way up to 204, and the brightness is much toned down, but the tobacco-y flavors come more forward. Still tasty, but different.

Yes. Please!

I really enjoyed their Double Rainbow offering -- picked up some for the office (so I pulled it using a La Val HX pourover), and found it very enjoyable in straight shots. Yes, it's bright, but that makes a nice difference (for me) from the "snickers bar" chocolate, nuts and caramel I get from the Redbird at home . . .

Ritual is my "go to" local roaster when I run out . . . Remedy Coffee is an Oakland coffee house that uses Ritual, and it's easy to swing by on my way to the office if I need to grab some beans.

Yep I found double rainbow too bright and would have preferred a more balance cup.

I also tried Guatemala la folie from Ritual and Kenya kiandu in Eva Solo.

Both were nice, but I had a crush on the kiandu, more complex than la folie.

Guatemala has a nice orange peel, nice balance
Kiandu: Peach, almond, plum notes, definitely one to try.

Was the double rainbow as good as this?

Damn, now people are marketing coffee based on internet memes.
