Quality budget coffee options in Canada?

Postby entropyembrace on Fri Sep 02, 2011 9:38 pm

Ok personally I don't mind paying $16+ for a 12oz bag of coffee to get the best I can for espresso from top level roasters like Transcend, Social, Cherry Hill ect. It seems refreshingly inexpensive after what I spend on tea

But....my parents have developed a taste for fresh coffee and don't quite have the tolerance for splurging on a drink that I do. They keep trying "premium" grocery store fare like Van Houtte, St City Roasters ect to try and save money but it's often flat and bitter tasting and dad especially doesn't really enjoy it.

I've suggested the $12 and $13 blends from Social as a better alternative...that's closer to their spending tolerance and should still be fresh and tasty. That's still kind of "expensive" but better than Transcend which is Dad's favourite so far.

In the US there's options like 5lb bags of Redbird for under $50 shipped which is significantly less expensive than even Social's cheapest blends....do we have any quality budget options like that in Canada?

Social is probably the cheapest.

Speciality coffee as a price... Paying fair trade price, I wouldn't see anybody selling under 10$ a pound. And nobody does, expect for high volume purchase. Market is in that 16$/12oz range.

If you are lucky enough to be in Montreal you can go to most Italian coffee bars in the east end and buy a pound of their blend for around 10$ (http://www.CafeMilano.ca is one example). Otherwise (and I know that some people on this forum may disagree) you can also buy a kilo of lavazza blue for coffee bars and restaurants ( I like the top class) for anywhere between 23 and 30$ a kilo. This can be found in some restaurant distribution stores or some Italian grocery stores.

I've found Las Chicas Del Cafe....located in Ontario roasts and ships fresh coffee from their fathers farm in Nicaragua for as low as $13 for a full lb...right around Red Bird's price...has anyone tried them?

Mario...we're quite far from Montreal but there is a good Italian grocery in Edmonton...their coffee has been hit or miss but better overall than the regular groceries...have to figure out which brands are freshest and well roasted. They have quite a bit of stuff from old school Canadian roasters but some of it just tastes burnt even its not roasted that dark.

Marc...I'm just looking for Redbird range prices north of the 49th...around $12 for a full pound...I know below that it's commodity coffee territory.

There is Terra Café, from Montréal (very low shipping charges, about 16$/500g (about 15$/lbs)).

Here is what I wrote previously about them: Terra Coffee

Thank you for the suggestion Louis :)

What do they mean by Torrefazione Artigianale Granito roast?

It is simply translated from Italian to "artisanal roasting". Granito is the family name of the roaster/owner.

I can't speak to the roast quality or price/quality ratio of coffee from Terra Cafe, but I can speak to their customer service and turnaround times, which are excellent. I buy green from them, and even though I'm in Montreal, it's still easier to have it shipped to me. It's often enough that I've made an order and had it arrive within 24 to 36 hours.

The greens I buy there are the Hatian Grand Cru du Beaumont, which are expensive but make for very tasty espresso.

Good luck finding something for your folks, though!

A new premium roaster just got into business. The name is Reunion Island coffee( oakville, ontario).

There espresso blend (bullet espresso) is $9.80/lb if you buy the 1 kilo bag. I think if you spend 40 dollars you get free shipping too.

I tried them b/c I got a half price coupon from red flag deals.

Their blend is pretty tasty. I pulled 2 fl oz at 198f in like 25 seconds. Its brings out tons of the dark chocolate flavor. I really enjoy this blend in cappucinos. Dark chocolate cappuccino YUM! :D

That particular blend scored 88 or 89.... I forget... one of the two.

And I wouldn't recommend you go wth red bird. I live in toronto...was so hyped up about the bird. I payed like 80 bucks b/c of UPS that ripped me off on shipping. ON top of that by the time I got my 5 lb bag it was already 7 days past roast. Mind you though...red bird is gooooooood. Thats my 2 cents on the bird.

Lol My parents also complain about my "excessive consumption" I usually go through 1 lb a week which isnt that bad...
