Normal to get "yellow" beans from Metropolis Redline?

Postby samuellaw178 on Thu Sep 22, 2011 10:39 pm

I ordered Redline Espresso for the first time from Metropolis after reading the recommendations. Used to patron Jeff's Redbird and other blends but decided to change to see what am I missing.

The Redline Espresso was ordered on Sunday and arrived quickly on Wednesday. 3 days post roast, pulled a shot upon arrival. Grind setting spot on on the first try! Great flavors, with strong chocolate as background and some fruity brightness to it. The body was on the watery side though. Pulled another 2 shots the next day, still the same, a noticeable lack of body as compared to the Sumatra from Jeff. But I suspect this is probably due to insufficient rest as I read that Redline only shines at least after 4 days of resting.

Anyhow, I remembered that when I first opened the 5lb package, I noticed that there are quite a few of yellow beans(under-roasted?) mixed in the coffees. I didn't pay that much attention to it at that time. But today, I thought of it again and was wondering if that's normal as I don't remember getting this light color from Jeff. Is this normal? Or is this the legendary Yellowline that they accidentally sent me? :P

It's a form of quaker. Usually most of them are found in Natural processing. Redline use some Natural ethiopian if I remember well for their blend. They could affect the taste of your coffee, but some don't.

You can remove them, but it's part of the taste.

Thanks, Marc - yes, those 'yellow' beans are most likely natural process Ethiopian coffee (Sidamo Guji currently). The depth and layered flavor is somewhat accountable to the inconsistency. As for the body, the coffees in Redline are not really intended for a heavy bodied profile, though the body certainly will develop with a little more rest. Glad that you enjoy it though.

Cheers! Skal! Kampai!

Thanks Marc and Tony for clarifying that! It's my first time trying a different blend and am glad I did. Really enjoy it. Will try to experiment more to get the best from the beans.
