Newbie guide to coffee characteristics

Postby BruceB on Fri Feb 26, 2010 8:48 pm

Ok, so I'm using a French press and a hand grinder at the moment. In the quest to learn more about coffee I want to find out more about the characteristics of different coffees so can anyone who point me in the direction of a good guide about the general characteristics of different beans as this is an area I know little about.

At a personal level I prefer dark, full bodied, sweeter coffees that are rich. You can see that may I lack the correct vocab to adequately describe the type of coffee I like in order to be able to ask for recommendations, so I apologise as I try to struggle my way through this! But I recently tried an Ethiopian bean, but I found the acidity to hard on my stomach and the overall taste too weak for my preference. One coffee I have found that I truly love is Kicking Horse Hoodoo Jo, and it makes for excellent coffee and I absolutely love the smell of the wet grind after I've drank it, the overall aroma is of melted chocolate.

It's all in the grind, Sizemore. Can't be too fine, can't be too coarse. This, my friend, is a science.
