Mountain Grown Beans, anyone used them before?

Postby Golden_Gabe on Sat Jan 07, 2012 10:35 am

As I started my Home Barista journey, I decided to test out as many suppliers of coffee to see what is going on what flavors are there, whether they indeed have what they say they do in the packets. So yesterday I went to the store, and I saw a supplier named "Victoria" it said they are the number 1 trusted among cafe's are restaurants. That brand is on my test list, but nevertheless I saw another bag of coffee beans by the same name but here it said "Wild beans, grown in Mountains". Another highlight was , "leaves you with a spicy aftertaste at the end" I like the sound of this one, $34,1kg. But I did not buy it yet as my budget would not allow me. However, has anyone used Wild Arabica beans grown in mountains? It sounded super exciting but, I thought why not, I need some spoilers on what to expect.

Roasted expensive gimmicky coffee is likely to be stale, since it probably doesn't experience the same turnover; whatever made it special, if it was, is probably long gone.

Was this a retail store? Was there any reason to doubt the freshness?

If you can be sure they're fresh, go for it, but don't get your hopes up.

Most coffee that needs to be marketed heavily probably needs it.

Need more context - my assumptions are probably way off

Run away from this supplier, since everything you quote is BS. All arabica is grown at altitude; there may be some wild strains in Ethiopia, but everywhere else you have carefully bred cultivars. If you want to be able to distinguish sense from nonsense, you might want to read up. One of the better intros is the coffeeresearch.org web site

Even 1m is altitude.

There are some low grown arabicas too.

...especially if they are boasting of being THE number 1 among cafes and restaurants. Like really? Any retail item that boasts of such standings needs to be questioned. And even if they are in fact trusted among any restaurants, I do not want to drink 99.9% of restaurant coffees. Super market coffee is almost always a terrible choice unless it is a market that specializes in sourcing local and fresh products. Even then, if you don't know the roaster, investigate first, especially if no roast date appears on the bag. Also, flavor embellishments like this and generic claims like "100% arabica" and "gourmet roasted" and the like are common to Starbucks... I'm just sayin'. I am pretty sure you want to stay away from this coffee.

I have an update on this little story, I found the official site of the supplier, made an error here the name is spelled "Vittoria" just has a silent "C". This is the brand i saw, so just follow the link, it looks very interactive. They say they have the purest coffee beans and the famous "mountain grown" beans are in there as well. It looks quite promising...... http://www.vittoriacoffee.com/ I want to I guess stick with a brand, not jump around all the time....so so many factors involved

On the off chance you're not a shill for Vittoria look for whole bean coffee that has information more specific than "a blend of mountain grown beans", that has a roast date on the bags, buy something that's been roasted in the last few days, and have a look at the Australian roasters on the list here.

You don't need a fancy Flash site to sell coffee beans, in fact, I generally avoid any retail sites that use Flash.

Wow, that may be the "flashiest" flash site I've ever seen.

Hey, it's Vittoria, what did you expect? Google "Cantarella Bros" for the parent company. When it comes to "Mountain Grown" they might be fudging it a little bit, as they have their own plantations in the Qld Atherton Tablelands ... but they do buy coffees from the same mountainous regions as everybody else in the specialty coffee industry.

Most of the Vittoria Coffees that are accessible retail are as stale as old boots. Try a local roaster like Pioneer Coffee, or as a last resort there's always me.
