Looking for roasted Yemen coffee/suggestions

Postby heavyduty on Tue Mar 29, 2011 12:05 am

Over a year into my new hobby I just realized I have never had a Yemeni SO. A quick google and all I get is either green beans or roasters I have never heard of. Are they out of season or just hard to find? Has all of the political & social unrest past & present affected availability? Also, I have read where a Ethiopian Harrar is similar to a Yemini. Is this true? I have had a Sidamo but not a Harrar. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or recommendations. Thanks! :)

Quality Yemens and the very similar Harars have been near impossible to get for a few years. The political situations there are worse than usual, and the importers get more static here. In addition, the top roasters are in a phase were they are increasingly leery of very rustic coffees. The best "Yemen" I had recently was a DP Sidamo last year that had lots of apricot and chocolate. For the time being I would recommend these lower toned Sidamos as the best alternative.

Indeed. It has been a few years since I had a nice blueberry Harar. Shame, I really love African coffee but the past few years have been a disappointment for the most pat.
