Local Roasters in Ohio

Postby redgrenache on Tue May 05, 2009 11:35 pm

Hello HB,

This is my first post. I have been lurking and researching on HB for some time. My first real setup is on the way from Chris Coffee. I wanted to know if anyone knew of any local roasters in the Cincinnati area that are good. :)

Thanks,

Sandro

Haven't looked in Cincinnati, nothing in Dayton but there is a roaster in Columbus. I roast most of my coffee or purchase it from any of the HB sponsors.

Welcome, Sandro. Good to have a local roaster. But if the issue that concerns you is freshness, you could place an order with quality roasters anywhere in the country, as long as they ship via USPS Priority. The USPS delivers this class of mail in 3 days or less, including Saturdays. I'm in Pennsylvania and have never had a problem even when ordering coffee from as far away as Washington State. When the coffee arrives, it's either ready for use (lighter roasts) or it still requires a couple more days of rest (darker roasts).

One of my favorite roasters is in California, but they refuse to ship via USPS. Since they do a very light roast, which has a shorter shelf life than a dark roast does, I have stopped ordering from them because UPS Ground and Fedex can take up to 8 days to go across the country if the weekend intervenes.

But you could order from Minnesota or Kansas or North Carolina or New York or Colorado even, and have the shipment go via UPS or Fedex with no problem.

Hello, Sandro. As other have noted, fresh coffee is available from all over the country. Particularly for espresso, coffee can be too fresh, with most blends peaking from 4 to 7 days after roast.

That being said, the new SCAA Member Directory lists several specialty coffee roasters in your area, who may be worth checking out.

Cincinnati: The Coffee Emporium; Lookout Joe.
Columbus: Cafe Brioso; Stauf's Coffee Roasters/Cup o' Joe.
Indianapolis: Hubbard & Cravens Coffee Co.

I knew a guy that had a cafe in Columbus for a while. He got his roasts from Stauf's. It was a relatively dark roast but pretty good. I have not had any for a good year. You can mail order it from the web page. Standard post should hit your door step in 2 days.

Coffee Emporium: link
Their Ol' Black Magic espresso blend is rather nice.
