While ordering our coffees at the register, I paid for a $15.99, 12oz bag of World's Best and gave them the option of choosing the blend for my double shot and didn't them any 'druthers or instructions.
They chose "House" (I forgot to ask the roast date) and pulled it more as a double ristretto than my typical double normale. I enjoyed the extra mouth-feel and richness from the extraction style, but found the mix to be a little on the bright side, too much fruit for my tastes.
The World's Best roast had about 2 days on it when purchased. It went into the hopper on Monday morning on top of a little bit of something else, so we didn't get our first, "clean" pulls until Tuesday.
Yesterday I drank it normale, today more ristretto. As a blend, it's got a lot more going on than my usual two or three bean efforts; but you can it's very strongly "based" (Indonesian?), and isn't too busy or confusing. Less bright than Belle or House, but certainly enough fruit to be a third wave. Surprisingly good florals, considering the depth of the roast. Lots of sweetness but not in the sense that the roast character overtakes the coffees'.
My wife likes her coffee in the form of a very milky, sweetened, double-double latte. However milky and masked her (giant) cup, she's a very perceptive taster. I'm not sure if that counts as an "How dare she?" or a go figure.
We both like WBE quite a bit, but me more than her. From the first sip to the last, she rated it below our two current house blends (both made with Klatch greens) and SM's Lenny Dee. I'm not quite as definite. It seems to me that WBE is better considered and better roasted; but that we really lucked out with our two, both of which address our particular tastes more exactly.
I'm not going to compare WBE to Lenny Dee until buying and roasting some more.
And h/t to Mike, Klatch's roaster, for inspiring one of our blends, and helping me not to really screw up on the other.
Anyone else tried WBE recently? What do you think?
