Kickapoo coffee roaster

Postby Marc on Tue May 10, 2011 11:19 am

Thought this would need a thread of its own.

Since about 2 months, Kickapoo crema espresso blend is killer. And I mean, better than Sweet Tooth from Ritual, 49th, and others.

Super sweet espresso, fruit forward profile (Sidama, brazil background)
They won 2010 roaster of the year, and it shows in the cup. Taste profile is an explosion of berry, citrus, and chocolate in the background. Body is luscious. Final is clean.

Brew trick, Faema round bottom basket and E-61 group:
You really need a high dose for this coffee, doing an 18g will get you an unbalance bitter espresso. Go between 19-20 to really let the coffee opened up. Between 200-201F brew temp.

Sounds interesting, has anyone in the states ordered from them? I'm wondering what the cost, and shipping times are like?

Also, is it just me, or is the picture on their Espresso Fuerte page show some epic channeling? Unless maybe the picture was just taken crooked and that stream isn't shooting way off to the right?

As an FYI, Kickapoo is the chosen roaster for this shop - http://www.poundcoffee.com/ - and their (Kickapoo & Pound) product is very tasty.

My experience at Pound was that the espresso pulled at the shop wasn't great, but I was getting excellent results with the Espresso Crema at home. I will certainly try to stop by again, but if pressed for time*, I might go with Peregrine around the corner.

*This can never be the case - there's always time for a second espresso.
