Ken Davids Goes Canadian

Postby Marshall on Wed Jun 08, 2011 12:33 pm

Canadian members may be especially interested in Ken Davids' all-Canadian June issue of Coffee Review. Preview: Ken thinks the the newer roasters may be going for light and delicate. http://www.coffeereview.com/article.cfm?ID=185

Thanks for posting this Marshall. Strange to see reviews of coffees from big franchises like Second Cup and Van Houtte mixed in with high-end roasters like Social Coffee and Tea. I'm book-marking the site.

That's what Ken Davids does, giving 91 to nespresso capsule too. *sigh*

What really struck me as a bit odd was that he neglected to post reviews or even name the coffees mentioned in the article that he didn't like. :?

I am never really sure what to make of CoffeeReviews. Many of the coffees we enjoy from high-quality independent roasters score in the mid-90s, but there are so many 90+ coffees it seems almost meaningless. 90+ K-Cup and Nespresso?

At the same time I see coffee from huge commercial "specialty" roasters like Van Houtte scoring really well compared to what I normally drink. My only experience with Van Houtte is when the coffee shop at my work switched to their products, and it was so awful it convinced me to buy a Baratza Maestro JUST to use at work. Reunion Island does not roast date and cannot even give me an idea of when the coffee was roasted. I've ordered from them twice. The first time the coffee seemed reasonably fresh and tasted fairly good, but the second time it pulled like it was pretty old. How old? Who knows? How is Ken Davids sourcing coffee from major cafe chains like Timothy's? Is it bought from the age-unknown bulk bins in a store, or fresh roasted direct from the company, which is unavailable to most consumers?
