Jars used to freeze the bean...

Postby espressonewb on Sun Feb 15, 2009 4:30 pm

Hello All,

I've been reading that quite a few of you buy fresh, take out a 2-3 day supply, then freeze smaller 2-3 day sized portions. Makes sense...

Do you all use just run of the mill glass canning jars with the screw top lid?

May sound like a silly question, but I've some around the house, and presuming my wife doesn't divorce me for putting fresh coffee in them, it'd be relatively convenient.

Thanks,

Mark

I prefer the lock lid types of canning jars, but the screw types work just as well. Some fancy jams we've bought in the past come in jars nicely sized for a half pound of coffee. They are the brand "La Parfait" and available on Amazon, though I didn't see them sold individually. This jar looks about the right size (0.5 liter).

Hey Dan,

Ahhh, I gotcha, couldn't quite picture what you meant by 'lock lid' type...Should have thought 'bottle of Grolsch' as drunk by the many trapsing around Holland in college! :)

Thanks!

IMO, Lock Lid type don't seal well enough for freezing. Some jars / lids are poorly formed and don't seal well. The lock mechanism does not apply seal pressure as evenly or anywhere near as forcefully as a screw lid.

Hello Mark,
Cost plus World market carries a wide range of sizes in locking preserve jars at a reasonable price, so you may want to try looking there. I tried using screw top canning jars that I use for pickling, but found that they can be a PITA unscrewing tops straight from the freezer.

I use vacuum bags, the Reynolds Handi-Vac system. I vacuum freeze small quantities in the 1 quart bags, then put about 3 of them in the gallon bags for a double vacuum. That way, I can make them quite thin to find the space in our crowded freezer.

I have had good luck with standard wide-mouth canning jars and lids using an inexpensive attachment for my vacuum sealer.

After the air is removed from the jar, the lid is sealed - it takes the edge of a butter knife to get them open again.

Hello all,

Thanks for all the suggestions and opinions. I don't have a food saver/vacuum sealer gadget, and I'm not apt to buy one just yet. I was also informed that we tossed the canning jars in one of our recent spring cleanings. Arggghhh...

In any event, there seems to be reasonably priced solutions out there, ones I'll pursue indeed.

Regards,

Mark

You can find canning jars at the local goodwill for about .25 each. You can buy the lids almost anywhere including grocery stores and target/wal-mart.

DO NOT open the jar right after taking it out of the freezer; you'll ruin your beans with condensation. Take the jar out of the freezer and allow it 4 hours or more to fully come to room temperature before opening.
