What is the typical Italian espresso volume/weight for a 7g dose?

It's such a small dose by USA standards, but if it ends up with 1/3 the volume of a "USA espresso" it's probably pretty close to the same extraction ratio. With a bit of Robusta in that dose you probably don't need much in order to get that caffeine kick.

I'm a bog fan of Caffe d'arte, all of the espressos are excellent and the dark drip blend is also great. I'm a little curious about the curved tamper. Would you explain a little more?

Reg Barber site offers a "Euro Curved" tamper and a standard "Curved" tamper. The Euro Curve is more pronounced.

I do not know how they derived the terminology but the curved tampers do make a difference with the tapered bottom baskets and especially the 7g singles.

This may be a dumb question, but if I wanted to try "Italian Espresso" beans, where would I order them? And what brand/blend would you suggest? I typically pull Counter Culture's Big Trouble. I tried some pre-ground LaVazza once but it was nothing but gushers and tasted horrible.

I have used Lavazza "Top Class" beans with decent success.

Does it make a difference where I order them - Amazon etc? Or are there better retailers with more recent roast dates?

I am not sure the exact place I ordered the last batch but Seattle Coffee Gear is one source I have used. Top Class is not on some web sites and I had to search.

Don't know about Amazon, never looked and I do very little business with them. Maybe 3 purchases in several years.

It is in stock here: http://www.espressodistributors.com/pro ... esso-beans Call and check the roast dates. Most of this coffee is specked for use 18-24 months past roast.

Amazon sells Lavazza Top Class via "Go Italy Gourmet" for $28.54, delivered Prime:

Or you can go directly to Go Italy Gourmet and get it shipped for virtually the same Amazon price:

Ordered last week and got beans roasted in June...of this year.

It's funny, I always seem to be pointing out Espresso Zone when these threads pop up because they have a good selection and price on Italian roasts. Sometimes you can catch free shipping with a coupon too. I feel like a shill  .

I picked up a bag of Bristot Sublime not too long ago, and it was pleasant and nutty.
