Intelligentsia El Diablo Dark Roast... Ugh.

Postby JmanEspresso on Fri Aug 07, 2009 5:59 pm

Hey everyone,

I just received my Intelli order, which was supposed to 1lb of BC Classic, and 1lb Los Delirious, Nicauraguan. And a Cup.

what I got, was the BC, the Cup, and the El Diablo Dark Roast. Silly Intellys. :)

Its not really a big deal that I got the wrong bag.. But does anyone have any experience with the El Diablo? Im not a huge fan of dark roasts.. Like.. At All.. So i did send them an Email. But there isnt much I can do, Im leaving on vacation on sunday. I was really looking forward to the SO I picked out.. but.. whatdya gonna do? I do however really like the bags the coffee comes in, and Im excited for the BC.

Anyone tried this blend before?

The El Diablo isn't really all that dark & I like it. It makes a nice morning brew in the press or vac pot. Give it a try.

I agree that the El Diablo is not as dark as you'd expect. It's nowhere near as dark as something like Starchuck's Espresso blend. As for taste...it's typical of the Intelly blends I've had (BC, Kid-O, El Diablo, El Galla, House,BreakfastBlend) - good, but nothing to write home about, but then again, taste is a very subjective topic. Tell us what YOU think about it.

Merle, maybe Kid-O has changed since I had it about a year and a half ago, but I found it VERY nice, even more to my liking than the Black Cat that came with it.

OTOH, Anything called El Diablo would NEVER be ordered here in the Nashville, TN area, the buckle of the bible belt.

LOL, Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback.

I did send an Email to Intelly, Via their Website. But, no one is going to get it till monday, and by then ill be on vacation, so Im not gonna be sending it back or nothin like that. Im gonna drink it and enjoy.

Upon further inspection of the label, its a blend of Kenyan and Rwandan. And, opening the bag reveals the roast level... BEAUTIFUL! Ive had espresso roasts darker then this, and I dont like my espresso dark either. Id say this is like a, idk,, Full City +? Thats what Id call... Not even a thought of oil. So, Im bettin it'll be great. Granted, BC is lighter then it.. And FWIW, the BC LOOKS like the level of roast I prefer my blends to be, so I may be sticking with Intelly for a couple orders. Though, I hope the rest of them are packed correctly :)

Id say that El Diablo is a wrong name choice for this, but, hey, what do I know. ill report back once Ive finished it up. It will most likely be brewed out of the VacPot, which is pretty much my vessel of choice lately for brewed coffee. Vacpot is good stuff.

I did however get a very cool diner-style mug. They are my mug of choice for americanos and brewed coffee. I have one from my favorite roasters. Klatch, CC, and now intelly. Still gotta get a Ritual mug, but Ritual makes me broke after a couple of orders :)

Thanks again guys

And that's why here, on the cynical east coast, I could never order Caffe D'Arte's The Meaning of Life blend. 8)

Jeff, for dark roasts that have no ashy edge but a deep and mellow sweetness, I recommend Caffe D'Arte's Capri and Taormina roasts. They may change your mind.

Hey, Thank Timo. Ive been meaning to one day, try the blends from Caffe D'arte, but I just havent ever got to it. I havent tried the El Diablo yet, I probably wont until monday. When I get back from vacation, Ill try and remember to order some coffee from them. Ive seen their blends come up in a review or two, I think...

But the BC is awesome. Got some great fruit which I cant identify yet, and great body with some, though not a lot, of chocolate on the end. Ive only pulled 3-4 shots, to get the grind where I want it. Im gonna fool around with temps today and see what I can get out of it.

Blackcat lately hasn't been too popular. They have re-sourced their beans and the blend these days is very bright and lacks the depth and body that made it so popular in the past. I recently visited their store on Broadway for a shot and came away disappointed. It was very thin and lacked body. They do an excellent job on a lot of their other blends, however. Just recently I had a chance to try a bag of their Honduras and French press it and it was fantastic. Jman, are you sure that was Blackcat you tried and not something else?

I personally really like the El  blend. I tend to prefer it over Black Cat and Kid O. A nice blend in my opinion and as others said, not so dark! :)
