How many pint jars = 5 pounds? - Page 2

Postby Randy G. on Wed Mar 09, 2011 2:27 pm

It sort of like asking, "How many inches in a gallon?"

One of my 6th grade students once asked me a confusing and poorly worded question, so I asked him, "Did you bring your lunch to school today, or did you take the bus?"
He replied, "I eat in the cafeteria."
So I asked him, "So how the heck did you get to school!?"

yet another useless data point...

I roast at 230g, assuming net is around 200g = 7oz.

Using 1/2 pint jars, each batch is slightly more than 2 jars

I don't want to reduce my batch size and for me that seems to the be max capacity
for my roaster. I need to find 2/3 pint jars :-)

Hoping any of you that freeze in Ball jars can tell me how many 1 pint jars I'll need to freeze 5lbs worth of beans.

Thanks!

The exact number would depend entirely on how dark you roast your beans. Darker roast = higher volume of beans per pound. I know I'm preaching to the choir here on that. 8)

To the average OP:
Do you have just one pint jar in the house?
Weight it empty.. Fill it with beans... Weight it again... Divide the number of ounces into 80. That's approximately how many jars you will need.

To the advanced OP:
Place the jar onto the scale and turn the scale on... Turn the scale on.. continue as above.

To the advanced OP with an advanced scale:
Turn the scale on... Place the jar onto the scale.. Press the "TARE" button.. continue as above.

I just bought some ball mason pint jars (regular mouth) and loaded them up last night with 4 different roasts (CC rustico, apollo, toscano, aficionado.) and used a digital scale.
I used grams so I could figure how many shots I'd get out of each jar.

The variation was between 160 - 175 grams of coffee per pint jar depending on the roast. Toscano took up the most space (160 grams per jar)

A "standard" 12oz bag sometimes fits into 2 jars, and sometimes has enough for a shot after filling 2 jars.
That would mean 13-15 jars to completely store 5 lbs.

I plan on staying with my 12 pack of pint jars, then put whatever doesn't fit into a normal airtight canister to be used first.

Just some more info. I bought a 8oz regular ball jar and a 12oz quilted jelly jar to see how much fit in each

8oz = 83 grams
12 oz jelly jar = 120 grams

I didn't use the wide range of blends that I did last time. Just more data for the record.
