Evocation Spitfire Blend

Postby jasonmolinari on Fri May 27, 2011 11:15 am

Not much chatter about this roaster here (Evocation). I got the name from the suggested list of blends for the HB team to review. The description of the blend flavors caught my eye; "Explosively sweet raspberries, strawberries and cream dominate most of the palate while subtle suggestions of tea rose, apricot and cane sugar quietly meander in the background. Dark chocolate prevails in the finish. The high notes are carried by an apple-like acidity which gives the shot a pleasant snap without being overbearing. The mouthfeel is best compared to sticky melted chocolate (seriously, it's that thick). Pulling at lower brew temperatures will accentuate the fruits, but at the expense of the dark chocolate in the finish. "
Add to that that it's only $13/lb and ships for $4, seemingly no matter the quantity, and i had to get some.

Just got it 2 days ago. I'm pulling it close to their parameters. They recommend a very ristretto shot. 17g grounds/18g coffee at 198. This was a little too intense for me. I've liked 18g/28g coffee. Bright, very fruity espresso. I taste ripe berries in there. Delicious.
I don't get the thick thick mouth feel they describe though. Maybe with a few more days rest.

Give it a try, tell me what you think. And thanks to whomever suggested it!

I had heard of their 49 mm espresso blend, designed for lever espresso machines, and after not getting any feedback from others who might have tried this decided to order this plus the more well known spitfire blend. There's another thread that mostly talks about the 49 mm espresso blend here.

I like them both, the 49 mm having strong pecan notes and the spitfire more fruit. Evocation Coffee Roasters has currently put their web shopping cart on hiatus while they open a coffee bar in Amarillo, but they should be back soon.

I've had both the older version & the version current as of late March. Recommendations for both were 200*f/17g dose/22g yield. I tried cooler & hotter but found 200* brought out fruit more without losing the sweetness. Both versions were best in the 4-10 day range. The 18g-22g shots were very thick & creamy.

I'm very pleased with this espresso. It's quickly become one of my favorites. It seems to be quite robust to dose changes and temperature changes.
I've liked it at 20g/1.5oz @ 200 and also at 14g/1.5oz @ 200. Different espresso outcome, both delicious. going up to 202 worked as well. Even shots which have pulled a little fast while i adjusted the grinder (17-20 seconds, vs 25-30) have tasted quite good.
