Eco-friendly coffee bags?

Postby michaelbenis on Fri May 29, 2009 5:51 pm

This is something I've been meaning to ask for a while following discussion with a number of roasters here in the UK, finally galvanised into action by the freezing thread, which also got me thinking about the emissions of repeat small shipments which I could be avoiding...

Does anyone know of a source of robust reusable or biodegradable vac valve or similar bags that could be used for shipping coffee without the wastage of the disposable foil bags that are the norm?

I throw out around 10 to 12 of these a month and it's driving me nuts.... (not that anyone else can tell the difference).

Cheers

Drop a note to Ritual in San Francisco. They have a note on their bags saying that the bags are compostable, and I'm sure they'd be happy to tell you where they source them.

Many thanks, David.

I've just dropped them an email.

In case it isn't obvious, "compostable" bags don't become compost unless they are sent to a composting disposal site. In ordinary landfills, they just take up space like any other bag.

Hi Marshall,

You're right, I should have pointed that out. The term Sanitary Landfill is accurate: not even a hamburger will decompose in one.

Good point, Marshall.

A recycled/recyclable or reusable option would be nice....
