Current values and don't miss list?

Postby andrewpetre on Sat Oct 10, 2009 4:13 am

Looking for suggestions for any current novelties in the market that might be good values.

Recently had Zoka's roast of the Colombia Villarica, and I really enjoyed it as americano, but the price is a little steep at double the blends rate. Maybe that's still a bargain. It was pretty remarkable.

Still, I want to keep educating my palate and was curious if there's anything this year that I shouldn't miss. It's always frustrating to hear "Oh, you should have tasted the _ _ last year" when it comes to limited production crops.

How reliable is the Colombian Cup of Excellence list? If the Villarica is any indication, maybe I'll just work my way through those? And let's keep it to those suitable for espresso.

As to preferences, I've enjoyed so far more of the Central and South American beans for the smooth, nutty, chocolatey vibes. I'm going to come back to Yirgacheffe and Kenya in another month or two and see if I can get a taste for the bigger acid and citrus flavors.

Have access to Seattle area roasters (Zoka, Stumptown, Victrola...) and of course mail order if I must.

Thanks for any tips!

One that comes to mind right away, is the Guatamala La Maravilla. Ecco Cafe has is, and Intelligentsia might still have it too. Ive been working through it this week... It is a great coffee, and surprisingly not too pricey.

The other Im thinking of, is from Intelly, but IDK if they still have it or not. Honduran Finca La Tina. That was a great coffee as well. Lots of tropical fruit notes and real sweet finish. It was my favorite espresso of the summer.

Oh heck, one more.. Ecco Cafe's Serra Do Bone Brazilian. Another great coffee.

I don't think Id would be able to pick a favorite, but I suppose if I had too, it would be the maravilla. There is so much cherry flavor in this coffee, its amazing. But honestly, they're all great.

Given your description, I'd suggest looking for high quality coffees from Guatemala.
Below are some suggestions for you from Stumptown. There are other great coffees you could mail-order, but if you have local access to Stumptown coffee I'd probably just stick with that for now.

Suggestions:
- Guatemala El Injerto Bourbon
- Guatemala Santa Cruz
- El Salvador Kilimanjaro
- Panama Don Pachi
