Creating the MVP Espresso Blend

Postby sweaner on Wed Dec 24, 2008 2:16 pm

I need help creating the new MVP Blend. As I somehow won that contest, I am tasked with coming up with something that would make Dan proud...and hopefully sell some so Paradise will do it again next year. Below is the email that Aaron from Paradise sent:

Aaron Meza wrote:Scott,

Congrats on winning the contest! We will need to get contact info from you so we can send you your espresso. You can certainly get as specific as you want with what you're looking for in an espresso, but for starters answers these questions:

Do you prefer Lighter roasted espresso (northern-Italian style) or darker roasted espresso (southern-Italian / Seattle style)?

In order of most important to least important, what are your desired characteristics (body, sweetness, acidity, flavors - {i.e. cherry, chocolate, herbal, spice, tobacco}, etc.

What is your preferred shot volume? {ristretto (less than 1oz), normale (1 oz), lungo (greater than 1 oz)}

Your first shipment will come with more specific questions, but this should give us a good starting point.

Aaron

My thoughts are to create a very forgiving blend that beginners and the experienced alike can enjoy. I prefer a sweeter blend with chocolate notes, but maybe a fruity note would be nice.

Below please provide any tips and ideas you might have. Let's work on this together and make something special.

According to the home page poll, 42% of the respondents drink straight espresso, the rest drink cappuccinos/lattes/macchiatos. Many roasters sell blends optimized to one preparation. In addition to the question of dosing/volume, I would add whether it will be served neat or with milk and if so, what volume.

How about a coffee so challenging it convinces you that you need a 3-phase Robur and a Speedster?

You could call it WAF 'spro (assuming your SO drinks coffee).

Don't be ridiculous! You sound like a Folger's employee.

This is your prize, so create a blend that will have the heavens opening and the angels singing for you.

That's why we bought a Livia 90, on the most recent version of this machine the single basket doubles as a pod holder. She has her Illy pods, and I have fresh beans. Make something for the real bean folks :)

Don't create a blend for us.
Describe the espresso you dream of - and let them try and create it.

I agree with those who have advised you to go with your own creation based on your tastes. Too many cooks spoil the meal.

We can all purchase some of the final creation and describe our own taste profiles and brew conditions. It could be a nice experiment.

I've been trying some Toscano Blend the past couple of days as my first pro roasts and I think I'm coming to the conclusion that my tastes lie more in fruitier blends as primary flavors. I love SO Ethiopian shots so my tastes would start there. Your mileage will vary and from your post most likely it will.

Enjoy the prize
