Counter Culture Coffee at Whole Foods!

Postby ronaldvalente on Sun Aug 21, 2011 2:54 pm

I just got back from the Whole Foods storage in Cary, NC. They have Counter Culture Apollo, Toscana, and Rustico! I was quite excited considering now I don't have to pay shipping when they are less than 1 mile from my house.

Roasted within 3 days too!

Whole Foods sources local roasters here in Los Angeles too. We get Intelligentsia. It probably varies by region or maybe even by store. Watch the dates though, they will leave old bags out. It is great when I need a hold me over bag if I didn't get anything ordered online in time.

I'm super jealous. We get Caffe Pronto, but that's it.

Luckily, a new outpost of Bocatto Gelato opened on my route to work and they sell Hair Bender!

specialty groceries are really stepping up the quality on all products, even coffee! There is a grocery by my work where I can get Stumptown beans roasted yesterday, Whole Foods carries stumptown and a few others with roast dates less than 7 days, and Market of Choice carries a few including Stumptown, Spella, Water Ave., etc. It's nice to see high quality foods readily available and reasonably priced :D

Interesting. I haven't seen any "3rd Wave" roasters coffees at our local Whole Foods in South Florida yet, with the best of their offerings being Illy and Allegro. Our local The Fresh Market carries CCC Toscano and Intelly BC, but I agree with compliance, watch those dates - some of the bags they had out on the shelves recently were roasted back in 2010, and the freshest I could find was roasted about 3 months ago. For now, I will resort to ordering directly from the roasters.

Yeah, with whole foods one was roasted within 10 days. The other was 30 days. That's no good.

I just received some redline today and it was roasted on 8/22! Now how do you beat that?!

Sometimes it may be worth the cost of paying for shipping. I live 3 hrs away from CCC and order on Thursdays and receive it on Saturday. Also the closest Whole Food store is up in the Raleigh / Cary area and none down here in Wilmington area

Don't forget, your local cafes will carry Counter Culture as well. Since the cafes go through espresso pretty quickly it's almost guaranteed they will have fresh beans on hand to sell you. I usually order twice a week for my shop in Raleigh and often order specific espresso by request for customers as well. If you need to know which shops, just call Counter Culture and they should be able to tell you.

Our Whole Foods is hit or miss with Counter Culture - I have found bags anywhere from three to thirty days old. It is nice when you find it fresh though since it is so convenient. Fresh Market has been mostly miss for me with regard to freshness of their coffee even though the variety is larger.

Have you tried Spella? I picked up a bag of their decaf espresso and thought it was pretty...meh. Very dark roast.
