Hi guys

A friend of mine is in New York at the moment and would like to bring me some coffee back.

Which one you could recommend at the moment?

Thanks for your advise and best regards from Switzerland.

Hopefully your friend is not visiting the east coast: Monster storm leaves U.S. East Coast crippled.

Hairbender from Stumptown. I'm 240 miles away but from the scenes of flooding I've seen and the news reports this am, I'd be surprised if anything "fresh" is available. You need advice from someone living in NYC given the storm. I lost power for 5 hours last night.

Oh good.

First, about Stumptown. Their roastery is in Red Hook Brooklyn, and that area got flooded in the storm. So they are getting their coffee from the west coast, and also roasting at other roasteries who are letting them use their equipment until they are back to normal. For that reason maybe it is better to stay away from their coffee if you have only one chance to get coffee from the USA.

But if you insist... Stumptown at The Ace Hotel
20 W 29th St
New York, NY 10001

Get the "Hair Bender Espresso". And make sure you check the roasting date.

Otherwise:
She can get Intelligentsia Black Cat at Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream
Make sure she gets the Black Cat and not the house blend. Again, check the dates.
48 1/2 E 7th St
New York, NY 10003
Neighborhood: East Village

Or, Blue Bottle Coffee. Get the Hayes Valley Espresso.
This is the roastery & cafe location. The coffee will be from "yesterday".
In Brooklyn, neighborhood: Williamsburg
160 Berry St
(between 6th St & 5th St)
Brooklyn, NY 11211

Also in the same neighborhood, Williamsburg
El Beit cafe. Get the 49th Parallel Epic Espresso. They get fresh delivery every Wed/Thu. So check that you get from the last shipment.
158 Bedford Ave
(between 8th St & 9th St)
Brooklyn, NY 11211

Williamsburg is a nice neighborhood for tourists. Recommended.
If I was to choose, I would get the Epic Espresso and/or the Blue Bottle. Forget about Stumptown and Intelligentsia. #1 Epic. #2 Hayes Valley. Or get both.

Good luck!

Good choice.

Pay attention to Hayes Valley instruction: they want a long pull.

From their web site:
Boiler Temp 203
Dose 21g in a double basket
Extraction time leisurely 35 seconds
Yield scant 1.5 oz
Preparation Method espresso

Epic is usually 28 seconds to yield 33g espresso, 200-201 degree, 18-19g dose.

Check their website for the latest espresso blend recommendation, and the beans they've used for that particular blend.
