Barismo espresso blends

I don't know how many people have tried Barismo outside of the Boston area, you can order on their site, but they're just down the road, so I'm not sure how their online service is. Their line up is constantly changing, and I'm never sure what's going to be available when I stop by, but I've tried a few excellent offerings from them in the last couple months. I'd recomend them to anyone, especially if you're looking for something different/interesting to try. Here's a few thoughts:

"Espresso 7" is usually available, and is as close to a 'comfort food' espresso as I've tried from them, it usually ends up tasting like a nice Costa Rican blend when I pull it (even though it's mostly Guatemalan).

They have a decaf Sidamo (which I don't think is on their site), which is excellent, nice and clear and balanced, I would never guess it's a decaf.

They just updated a couple of their blends, so I picked up a bag of SOMA, which is their "flagship" espresso blend, even though it's only available intermittently. This iteration (which is the first I had the chance to try) is excellent, and very easy to pull shots with. Dialing it in was almost comically easy, with the first shot I tried coming out thick and syrupy and delicious. Black cherry with some orange and caramel, very thick and creamy, and nice sweetness too. Didn't really work as a macchiato though, but I could drink straight shots all day (and pretty much did this weekend).

Also picked up a bag of "Lucid" a Colombian 2-bean blend, that I'll probably crack open this week.

Just broke open the "Lucid" this morning. Again, it was very easy to dial in, and is the pours are thick and creamy. The taste reminds of the Denis Leary line about "Coffee flavored Coffee!" It's very clean, light roast flavors, no bitterness or sourness, very light fruit, and a little sweetness. As a straight shot it's exactly what a cup of coffee should taste like, except concentrated and creamier. As a machiatto with a little sugar it tastes like a good coffee ice cream, but melted. I'm looking forward to trying it in a cappuccino too, but the straight shots are excellent, especially for the lack of any noticeable flaws.

I've had barismo beans many times before. I've ordered them online with success. I was there 2 days ago and they had a SO espresso I believe from Africa which was nice and my non-espresso drinking friend noticed how sweet it was. They do things right, and they're little shop is quite neat with the two yellow roasters on display constantly roasting. I got a bag of the 7 but they left it at my friends house! (now I'm in NY). I highly recommend them. Also, of note they supply almost all of the worthwhile cafes in Boston (in which to get espresso) with their beans which should say enough.

I've really enjoyed Barismo's coffee, whether at Barismo, Simon's, Cafe Grumpy (guest espresso), or my house. I ordered what turned out to be a great Costa Rican espresso from them in December - it's great that many of their SOs are presented as being versatile enough for either drip or espresso preparation.

Yes, it does look like they're taking over the Boston area - when I found out that Simon's switched from George Howell to Barismo, I knew they must be good.

I like that they are upfront with what origins and the percentages that are in a blend.

I just ordered a bag of Barismo Espresso 9 Blend that is described as :

Espresso 9
60% São Judas Tadeu (Brazil)
30% Las Nubes (El Salvador)
10% El Llano (Costa Rica)

Espresso 9 is the house espresso for several of our accounts.

Sounds like a winner.

I ordered a couple of their espresso blends today; the Soma & the Zone 10. Their 2.5lb option pricing doesn't make much sense as it is much higher per lb then the 1lb option??

Finally got around to trying Lucid as a cappa, and it was excellent, one of the better caps I've made at home. At first taste I thought it was going to be a boring cup (I also didn't do a great job frothing the milk), but it revealed many layers of flavor. It wasn't in your face or fruity, but it was great to sip on a morning off.

I just received a phone call from Barismo with the news that Espresso 9 has been retired, thus they are sending Espresso 7, so now I shall report on #7.

Today I received a nice email from Barismo with an apology for the confusion on their website....a couple of blends listed are no longer available. Apparently, their web-guy recently 'retired', so they are re-doing their website with "a different shopping cart, media about the coffees, farm visits, and brew guides."

They get an "A" for effort thus far.
