San Francisco Bay Area 2011 Holiday Get Together

Postby TomC on Wed Dec 07, 2011 4:20 am

2/11 San Francisco South Bay Meet-up, 11:00 a.m. until about 4:00 p.m.

Let's hear it from the multitude of bay area residents who'd like to have a casual meet-up before the end of the year. Perhaps those who roast their own will enjoy a roasting competition. I do, and will if I can garner enough interest and a proper location.

To make it interesting, from a roasting competition, I'm going to throw in a gift to the winning roaster (hope it's not me, because then it's pointless :D ) a brand new in box Artazza hand made cappuccino cup and saucer set. Maybe the spirit of the holidays will encourage others to contribute ideas, I'm just throwing out the ones that come to mind.

We'd need to find what works best for the largest group of people, schedule wise and location. That can be hashed out in this thread. If people want to roast for a competition, let's make it easy, bring whatever you want to compete with, and let's find a general consensus of what everyone likes the most. We can try it via drip most likely, or if someone has a dedicated espresso roast they want to submit, and the location permits us firing up some espresso machines, then we can go that route too. I think simplicity should be the target, instead of telling whoever wants to participate that they have to go out and buy "such and such" beans.

Please indicate if you would like to participate, and if so, comment on where and when works the best for you, if you'd like to bring coffee, coffee gear, compete in a roasting competition, actually roast on hand ( may be difficult if we just meet at a cafe) or if you'd like to bring a holiday snack of some sort. It's all up to you.

As for me, I have an open schedule for the most part and would be willing to travel within about 20 miles to make it work for others. I will PM a few members that I'm aware of, who live in the area, about this thread and hopefully get the ball rolling. If it's too late in the holiday season for folks, we can always do something after new years.

Fire away!

This is my first post. I'm not sure if I can go, but it's a possibility. Would be great to meet other HB members though!

I just got a mail back, saying your folder cannot receive messages. Not sure if its because you hadn't posted yet or what.

I can try again to send it.

That's really odd. I have received messages from other HB'ers without problems.

Tom,

I'd be interested in a get-together but would be more interested in meeting up after the holidays.

I'd be willing to bring my roasted coffee, coffee brewers, or even a lever espresso machine, location permitting. I looked around for a good location in the South Bay a while ago, but I wasn't able to line anything up. Not sure if Red Rock would be a possibility but I'd be interested even if the meet-up were in the Peninsula or East Bay.

I'm pretty open as to evening or weekend schedules, as well as location within about an hour drive of San Francisco.

Thanks for suggesting this!

Shoot! Well... I'll be there in spirit. I'll have a house full folks sharing my DNA up here in BC. Won't be back to the Bay until Feb.

Looks like we're cutting it too close to the busy holiday time for most. Let's hear some possible dates after the new year for a bigger meet up/ roasting competition.

Id still be happy to meet a small group of folks somewhere at a nice coffee shop. Maybe I can call around and see if any of the better ones in SF would be willing to do a brief tour of their roasters for 5-6 die hard coffee fans.

The folks at MoreCoffee in Concord have been very accommodating last time. The place is a warehouse/retail, without the stress of a busy coffeehouse. The vent in the back can evacuate smoke for coffee roasting in doors, should people want to bring their roasters. There are not enough outlets, so if several machines are running, do bring extension cords. The outlets I see are 20 amp.

Local 123 in Berkeley has a courtyard that could be reserved for event, but I do not know the cost nor schedule. Parking is a tight though. They can be reached at info@local123cafe.com

Hmmm. 20 Amp, that's more than I need with my humble Quest, but sounds interesting nonetheless.

I'm still hoping others in the bay area here will chime in and post in this thread, as apposed to PM'ing the ones I know of. So, if anyone wants to get together informally, here's the place to speak up :)
