Roaster in Washington, PA - 19 Coffee

Postby godlyone on Sun Feb 19, 2012 2:27 pm

I tried 19 Coffee's coffee (sounds silly) for the first time at Orbis Cafe (see my Pittsburgh coffee scene thread) and was absolutely blown away by their Ethiopian Harrar. It wasn't so much 'blueberry notes' as it was BLUEBERRY JAM!

The barista at Orbis (Max) recommended I contact the owners of 19 Coffee as they are nice and allow tours occasionally.

I emailed David from 19 Coffee and he was nice enough to allow my friend Visish and me to visit him in the morning (after both of us had overnight call in the hospital! )

When we first got there - we both were unsure if we were at the right place or not. There is no sign on the door and the roastery is located under a freeway. It seems like a shady area to say the least - but the house # was the same one we were given so we approached the door.

Suddenly we smelled the aroma of fresh roasted coffee and we knew we were in the right place.

Both David and J-P were super nice and spent a few hours just talking coffee and doing some tasting. They invited us back and we will probably take them up on that offer!

I recommend you guys to try their coffee - you will never taste a Harrar like this one. Their pricing is very competitive for being a small micro roaster and of course everything is roasted to order.

19 Coffee is a two man operation - David and J-P. J-P is the master roaster and David handles the business side of things. They were both formerly employed by La Prima.

Inside is their office:

And their 1 group La Cimbali they use for tasting espresso:

The roaster they use is one of the newest to be released from Probat

David tells me that the roaster is so new that it delayed their opening waiting for probat to finish it.

Overall we had an excellent time talking to both David and J-P. They know a lot about coffee and enjoy learning new tips + tricks.

I was talking to them about having Jim do some cupping for them to see what a professional cupper thinks
