A little out of your way, but for a legit Cubano; http://www.amorcubanonyc.com/IEHome.html Take the subway On Lexington North to 116th. Amor Cubano is at 111th and 3rd. Spanish Harlem. This is NOT Third Wave This neighborhood Is loaded with great food. You won't regret the trip. Cheers, -Scott

Zibetto is somewhat close

Not third wave, but does the Italian cafe experience well for the US.

First morning in New York. I had a 6oz cappuccino at Joe on Columbus Avenue. Very much to my taste: rich, mild chocolate and nuts with a little acid bite at the end. They are pulling a blend of Peruvian and Colombian beans at the moment. I'll try their straight espresso another time. Helpfull, knowledgeable staff.

Thank you for this: I had their Blackstrap blend espresso yesterday. Rich, nutty, satisfying: I was enjoying the aftertaste for at least a half-hour.

I haven't been to the UWS location of Box Kite yet, but definitely try to go. Their east village location is still head-shoulders above any other shop in the city. They know from coffee!

I failed to find the 72nd St location of Box Kite yesterday, but I made up for it today by having an espresso at the St Mark's Place shop. It was excellent and the barista was familiar with London roasters and coffee shops. Very rewarding.
