NYC Hotels near good espresso?

Postby Grant on Fri Jul 10, 2009 12:02 pm

Hi all,

A little off topic here, but we are visiting New York in October. We are looking for a moderately priced hotel in a central Manhattan area (yeah, right!) but we really want to be close to a decent coffee house/espresso bar as well. An important part of daily routine on holidays for us is to wake up and enjoy a great coffee!

I realize there are other posts about coffee in NYC, but I can't seem to coordinate where to find decent espresso while ALSO locating a decent hotel nearby. There are just too many options for hotels.

Any suggestions on where to stay with near-by espresso being a concern?

If you want to be close to the best cafes, you would probably want to be at or below 14th street (or in Chelsea, which may stretch above 14th a bit), though I don't know what hotels are around there (in fact, I don't know anything about NYC hotels at all!). There should be a good selection at/around Alphabet City and the East Village (Abraco, Ninth Street, Ost, etc.) but I'm just guessing here. For a better view of where things may be, try http://www.espressomap.com. While that isn't an exhaustive list (see other NYC threads for that), it will give you a good idea of where to look. No matter where you stay in Manhattan, you won't be more than a 30 minute subway ride from great coffee (seems short for me). A number of places are also in Park Slope. Good luck!

If you're going to be staying in Manhattan in October, you can't get better to best espresso than staying at the newly opened Ace Hotel at 29th and Broadway. Beginning soon, there will be a brand-new Stumptown Coffee in the building. If it's anything like the Ace Hotel in Portland, it's going to be amazing.

Consider the Chelsea Inn on 17th St. http://chelseainn.com/ Subways nearby.
Some think it's great, and others say it's good enough. It's about a 10 minute walk to Chelsea Market for 9th St Stumptown (16th at 9th Ave.) Cafe Grumpy on 20th b/ 7th & 8th is even closer with a more cafe-like vibe. Also very reliable, but the Market has lots of food attractions.

I know this is late for the original post, but I am sure others will read it. We were in NYC last month for about 8 nights and stayed in the Parker Meridian which is in midtown. While it is not terribly close to most of the hotspots (Gimme, Stumptown, Joe, etc) it did have a coffee bar within called Knave. They use Counter Culture beans and depending on the barista working, pulled some really nice shots. It is also built like a cathederal and was pretty impressive to see. Not the typical coffee shop. My only knock is the prices are a little high, even for NYC. We went to Gimme, Stumptown, Joe and Grumpy. All were excellent with my nod going to Gimme. The new stumptown in the Ace hotel is a great location and that hotel seems like a great place (not sure on the room rates). All-in-all I would recommend the Meridian for its location. It also has the best burger in NYC, called Burger Joint.
