Regarding Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, there is this thread/topic - Baltimore-Washington DC Coffee Shops

By the way, Peregrine is really good (particularly their Eastern Market location). However, I still prefer espresso from M.E. Swings (in particular, their Alexandria, VA roasting facility).

There was a great little app for iPhone called Espresso Map that I used to use but have recently switched to Android. I think this is their website which has some good recommendations.

Note that Cartel and Press each have several locations in the Valley, including Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, and Chandler.

There's finally a good coffee shop/roaster in the South Bay of Los Angeles. Boy and the Bear Coffee Roastery.

I would take Compass Coffee off the list in DC. They serve foul tasting robusta burnt to a crisp, although it's got 3rd wave cafe looks down pat enough to fool most people.
