All i found was an old thread so I thought I'd ask again..... heading out in March to a conference. I'll be in the downtown area without transportation but with a DART pass- willing to explore if there is good espresso to be had. thanks in advance, jim

I'm a ways out of town (just west of DFW airport).

There are a number of shops in the design district just west of downtown that have a good rep. Might try Yelp and sort the knowing from the great unwashed masses in the reviews.

My company that I work for has a main training facility in Dallas and it doesn't hurt that my brother owns the Texas Theater which gives me an excuse to go down as much as possible :) I just got back from some training this past week and I hit up http://www.yelp.com/biz/ascension-coffe ... 0Ascension and I highly recommend them. They have a SO Brazil they are pulling that is just too sweet for words.

Cultivar is an absolute must and it is attached to a place called Good 2 Go Taco's, which if you don't eat those while you're there you are a fool :) Hands down my favorite breakfeast burritos ever. Worth noting their hours suck, till 3pm daily and they are closed Mondays. http://www.yelp.com/biz/cultivar-coffee-and-tea-dallas

Oddfellows pulls Cuvee coffee, which is not bad by any means but make sure you get it as it comes off the machine (They brought mine luke warm and I sent it back). The service at Oddfellows is extremely slow and they're your EXTREMELY stereotypical "Non conformist hipster so I don't have to wait hand and foot for you" hipster. Not a bad thing, just know the crowd that hangs there is pretentious as sh*t and thinks they all heard the first Death Cab for Cutie song before it existed. A must visit from me though because their Brisket and Hash is amazing. Jason, head barista, makes a mean cortado. http://www.yelp.com/biz/oddfellows-dallas

Oak Lawn Coffee has some of the best Iced Coffee I've ever drank, claim to fame happens to be....Iced Coffee. http://www.yelp.com/biz/oak-lawn-coffee-dallas

Make SURE you go to Ascension and chat up Henry, the owner, if he's there. Tell him a guy from Chicago who just visited told you to come in and try the SO Brazil (He may give you some samples :) I might be showcasing his coffee next month on my Cart).

Hope this helps!

Maynard is giving the best possible advice. I have been to all his recommendations, by far for me the two must gets are Cultivar for the espresso and tacos and Oak Lawn if you are an absolute iced coffee nut like I am. A note on Cultivar, they do this side by side espresso that is quite awesome. They pull their house espresso or whatever is roasting at the time and a featured "guest espresso." The best espresso "Pepsi challenge" I have partaken for sure. Another note on Cultivar: purist to the core. Memory serves correct-no syrups...at all, they do not believe in them:) I am in Dallas about 28 weekends out of the year, I do not live there so I discovered Cultivar my last trip. I think it is the best in the bunch and WILL be back many, many times.

There are others I would recommend depending on your heart for travel (knowing you are using public transit). Number 1 is definitely The Pearl Cup, find them at http://pearlcupcoffee.com/. Voted best coffee house in Dallas for many, many years. The other one is Avoca in Fort Worth. Seasoned roaster, sells beans in mason jars you bring home with you. Great environment. Great baristas. Home made chocolate on site:) Find them at http://avocacoffee.com/.

Lastly, pretty nice write up here http://www.dailycandy.com/dallas/flipbo ... ss#slide=1. The ones I agree with have already been said. Check another and report back if you are feeling adventurous:) Another list is this: http://dallas.cityvoter.com/best/coffee ... orth-texas

Enjoy Dallas!

Another vote for Ascension Coffee! Just today, Henry served me a delicious Amaro Gayo DP via both Chemex and as a shot pulled off their Synesso. The roast reigned in the acidity and produced a deeply fruited cup, lots of berry and apricot.

They roast their own, and also sell variable temp Bonavita kettles alongside Chemex brewers. Beautiful space, open with lots of glass and wood. Great food, too, with a simple yet delicious Italian slant.

Henry took the time to sit and chat coffee with me, which was generous considering that they were busy with their lunch rush. I departed with inside info on an upcoming equipment acquisition and left them some Sumatra Lintong we roasted a week back! I had a blast.
