SCAA certified coffee training lab in Hong Kong now too! I am planning to take some workshops here, I have heard they are really running a great training program, even doing Q grader training and testing with CQI.Marshall wrote:SCAA has opened a Representative Office in Beijing, and barista and roaster training are under way. The interest in coffee in Asia is intense.

Jeanlook. I believe there are three cafes in Taipei. Jeanlook was named after a sword from the Warring State period, literally means "black steel":SlowRain wrote:Do you have their addresses, or else links to their websites?

For Cafe Sole, there is no website. The address is:
No. 133, Guāngfù South Road, Sinyi District Taipei City, Taiwan 110
光復南路 133 號
02-2767-6076
Both cafes are within walking distance of the subway stations Taipei City Hall or Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall.
By the way, Scott opened up a roastery in Taichung called the Factory. Someone else's blog:

Thanks.
I was at the Factory on Sunday. I've been there several times. It's nice.
There's a Cama Coffee here, too, with the roaster out front. It's nice for people to be able to watch the whole roasting process. I had the absolute best microfoam I've ever had at that particular location. It was a shame the beans were so burnt-tasting.

How was the Factory? Can you share your experience?
Cafe Sole and Jeanlook were the two cafes that have relatively light roasts. The previously mentioned Coffee Sweet also has very light roast. I agree, most coffee shops in Taipei roast to 2nd crack, if not beyond, similar to the typical cafes in my California neighborhood.

I've been there several times. Scott closed down his original Mojo Coffee location when he opened this one, but Retro is still open. The Factory is in a back alley, so it's much quieter. Unfortunately, I haven't had a good cup of brewed coffee there yet. His espresso still tastes the same as it always has, which is a bit too dark, bitter, and a little burnt-tasting for me, but it's not bad and still better than mine. I also don't think Scott does the roasting anymore. As far as ambiance goes, here are some pictures, from construction all the way to the present. Apparently, he has a Hydra tucked away in the lab on the second floor, but he hasn't brought it downstairs yet.
