I finally got to visit Cafe Aficionado a couple of weeks ago and loved it. As a previous post mentioned, they're very intentional about their coffee selection and service. From talking with the owner, they used to serve all Handsome Coffee until they got bought by Blue Bottle, and now they serve almost exclusively Nordic coffees from Wendelboe, Drop, and Supersonic (they had run out of their espresso offering so were serving Stumpdown's Hairbender). Had a fantastic Chemex of Supersonic's Kanzu, Rwanda (also picked up some whole bean to take home) followed by the espresso on the way out.

Definitely stop by if you're ever in Arlington.

Just thought I'd bump this thread with a little press from Sprudge: http://sprudge.com/a-coffee-lovers-guid ... 81063.html. For most of the time I had lived in Baltimore, spro was the only game in town unless you went to Woodberry Kitchen for a nicer meal. What a difference a few years makes.

What ever came of the space occupied by LA Mill?

I've moved away, too, so I'm not sure what replaced LAMILL. Pretty cool to hear/read that Ceremony is building a shop in Mt. Vernon!

For those who are unaware, "NB" is an accepted abbreviation for the latin phrase "nota bene", meaning note well.
As a side note "funny", I was a young engineer (many, many years ago) working on a project involving diesel fuel. In that capacity, I had the opportunity to discuss fuel properties with a older scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory. He had written many technical papers and one that we were discussing contained several NB's. Being somewhat naive at the time, I asked if this meant "no bullsh** ". With much laughter, I was kindly educated as to the true meaning of NB.

I'm a little overwhelmed by this thread and all the choices

. I'm planning a week long trip to Washington DC in a couple weeks (near the white house area) and wanted to figure out where the best espresso could be obtained. Especially to determine which might be worth going a little out of the way (or ones that are out of the way but near cool spots to check out).

From the standpoint of your planned locale, Peregrine, Filter, & Dolcezza come to mind as regards proximity.

It was never the intent to "rate" coffee houses other than the original criteria.

For espresso I still think Peregrine is the best in DC, but If you're near the White House then definitely stop by Swing's on G Street (one block away) and Filter for some locally roasted coffee.
