Bucking the current drip-centric trend, Andrew Barnett's Linea Caffe will open this week in S.F. with only espresso, tea and pastries. Andrew is a friend, and I wish him well. This is his first shop since Ecco Caffe. Sprudge report here: http://sprudge.com/linea-caffe-andrew-b ... -food.html.

At this point, if you live in L.A., S.F., Portland or NYC (not to mention Melbourne or Seoul), there is so much top level coffee, it's hard to decide where to drink next. I'll be in Seattle this week and see how well the one-time leader is keeping up.

Marshall,

I think that would be fun great fun to compare. Since I know I won't be in LA or SF or Melbourne any time soon, let us know what you find on your trip as compares Seattle to other cities. For premier coffee or espresso in Seattle there are Milstead, Stumptown, Tougo, Ladro, Trabant, Vivace, Vita, Victrola, Zeitgeist, Fonté, Slate and no doubt others. (Too bad Hines Public Market Coffee moved on these years ago - I bet they'd still be putting on a good Spro.)

But for places that do food and coffee well that could be a challenge. Try Canlis if you want both done very well.

EDIT: Here is an interesting post from Sprudge that might be an interesting opportunity and some hints for fine food and coffee: http://sprudge.com/seattle-an-evening-w ... offee.html
